But only slightly =w=<br><br>1. Signs can carry weight. Their usage can communicate: \"I am overwhelmed with emotion. I lost my voice. Usually, in times like this, it is of little use. People hide their faces. They try to process and digest and regain some integrity. Never mind any of that. I want you to know...\"<br><br>2. Light travels farther than sound. And yet, a sign language can feel more intimate than a spoken one.<br><br>For starters, not many people use it. In the US, for example, about twice as many people know Korean compared to American Sign Language. No matter how crowded the street is, your signed conversation remains as private as if you whispered in the other person's ear.<br><br>Another thing: whether you want it or not, you intercept sounds from all directions at once. A conversation, of sorts, may proceed even when you don't want to participate. It's very hard to abstain until you pump some loud music into your headphones or leave faster than ey follow.<br><br>And then, you can simply avoid eye contact, in an attempt to distance yourself from the conversation or hint at your reluctance to engage.<br><br>Signing is very different. Every interaction is deliberate.
